Bedding Trends for 2014
… As I braved the January white sale mania this month, I am happy to report a few great scores. After a disappointing web purchase I hit the pavement scouring through the major retailers on the hunt for the perfect guest room bedding. First, the color palette for the room is very specific – beige, white, black and red.
Recently I finished painting my son’s room in
Benjamin Moore Capitol White CW-10 on 3 walls
Shaker Beige HC-45, Benjamin Moore as an accent wall behind the bed
both in a Aura matt finish
with my favorite Benjamin Moore Super White trim.
I absolutely love these colors so I was over the moon when the painting was finished.
So here’s my journey as I discovered some bedding trends along the way!
My first challenge
I went against my first rule
Choosing paint before all the elements of design are in place. Sometimes it happens ~ when you have the time to paint you have to paint, no problem finding the perfect shade of beige for the duvet cover right?
My next challenge
Sticking to my “survival tactics” for January White Sales
In almost every store I can’t tell you how many times I picked something up and walked around with it only to put it back. The “lure of merchandising” had me when I couldn’t find that perfect beige breaking me down with every footstep. Having a strict color palette and understanding the design plan kept me from buying those drapery panels on sale for only $45.99 – come on $45.99 for a regularly priced $149.00 it could have worked if I was willing to be pulled into the overall design scheme of this particular retailer.
After 3 days of shopping January white sales and trying to stay on budget there it was the perfect beige duvet cover and shams at 40% off! I also got a great deal on a coverlet, 50% off with an applied $50 off coupon, nice.
What I purchased ~
Duvet, Bern Collection, Calvin Klein Home, and shams from Bloomingdales
And a Coverlet, Calvin Klein Home, from Bonton

So in my travels on-line and on foot from discount retailers to high-end retailers these are some of the bedding trends that I saw …
First of all there are so many bedding options available but the real standout for me was the use of linen in everything from duvets and coverlets to shams. With the use of linen the color palette was neutral or natural if you will in “flax” a grayish linen color, each manufacturers color was different when it came to the color name “flax”.

One clear color standout was gray. Gray paired with bold accent colors such as; orange, yellow, turquoise, purple and green. The addition of these accent colors with gray were everywhere.

Layered bedding, I know its store merchandising but it looks just so good which brings us to the coverlet. The coverlet is having its day in the layering process the amped up colors and fabrics are everywhere and they look great.

Last but not least, bedding trends
Tried & True
While “hotel” bedding is still popular today, there is a shift to a more comfortable relaxed vibe. White will always be an important player in top of bed colors but I think “Hotel” bedding is being nudged out of the number one spot to make way for a layered bed full of natural neutral linens.

With all the options and trends I still think it’s less about the product and more about individual style ~ again the consumer is driving the trend towards a comfortable livable home~ nancy
