From the 2014 Design Bloggers Conference, Toma Clark Haines challenged us to “be open to opportunity”. This resonated so much with me, I ran into her after the session and gave her a big hug to thank her.
Just say yes and see where it leads you, what lessons you learn, what you like and what you don’t like, what works and what doesn’t, but without saying yes ~ what are you experiencing?

I remember when my boys were in high schools sports, after a devastating rivalry loss, my son was trying to come to grips on how to handle it. As I met him at the parent allocated 50 yard line spot ~
I said to him ~
“look at all the people in the stands who came to “watch” the game tonight, you were IN the game, win or loose you win because you were IN the game, you’ve worked hard since First Grade Pop Warner to earn your spot on the Varsity High School Football field as a starter, you’re dedicated, you’re active in your life, you did win”.
How many of us loose sight of saying yes, yes to the new job, yes to the volunteer opportunity … just saying yes.
I remember answering a letter sent out to the ASID members in Philadelphia by a wonderful woman, friend, designer and ASID member Linda Daly asking for volunteers. I said yes. In 2010 I literally helped out with whatever needed to be done for the IDA’s, picking things up or making a phone call. After the IDA’s I was asked to Chair the next IDA’s (Interior Design Awards) in 2013. I said yes.
I must credit my son however, he was the one who said to me “just say yes”, and so I did. Sometimes you just need someone in your corner to remind you to “just say yes” and I’m one lucky and grateful mom to have my 2 sons in my corner!
Now I’m on the board of ASID Philadelphia and absolutely love the friendship and support found within that group of talented professionals.
When I think back at the times that ~ I said yes ~ those were my times of movement & growth, sometimes it worked out, sometimes it didn’t … but I’m IN the game.
What a powerful statement “I said yes”, try it and see where it leads you ~ nancy
