In Feng Shui I have heard it said that clutter has a way of keeping you trapped unable to move forward.
I agree, this motivates me and also has a way of making me reflect why I haven’t taken the time to clear things out.
Yesterday I spent hours going through old clothes to donate to my Church’s annual rummage sale. Having a deadline motivates me to get it done and it helps me to let go knowing that the proceeds go to a good cause.
When it comes to decluttering your closet, which camp are you in
“ugh 🙁 ” or “yay! 🙂 ”?
I’m definitely in the “ugh 🙁 ” camp. I don’t like to spend time clearing out stuff … but I love to be organized so once it’s done I love it!
My transformation to a “yay 🙂 ” person happens knowing that my clothes can be donated and enjoyed by someone else.
And … Closets are a fun room to decorate and organize
Here are my Top 5 Closet Decluttering Tips that work well for me ~
I hope you will find them helpful for you too!
My first tip ~
Make sure to have some great music on!
My second tip ~ start slow with 4 piles
3. Toss out
4. Maybe(love the maybe pile!)
The “maybe” pile is key in speeding up the process.
With a “maybe” pile you don’t need to hem and haw over everything, just put it in the “maybe” pile.
Revisit the “maybe” pile when your done, if you can’t move the items into any of the other piles, keep it. If you don’t reach for the “maybe” box during the year, it’s a quick donate pile for next year!
My third tip ~
For each season keep a shopping bag in your closet.
When you put something on and don’t like how you feel in it instead of hanging it back up, put it in the shopping bag right away.
When the bag gets full simply donate it.
My Fourth Tip
Have a deadline …
A local rummage sale …
A neighborhood garage sale …
anything that gives you an end point really helps to get the clutter cleaned out.
My Fifth Tip
What’s your end game???
Do you need to update your clothing?
Are you moving??
Do you want to redecorate your closet??
Or do you just want to be able to find what you need when your looking for it?
Whatever your end game is … use it as your motivation.
