February’s room of the month: Family Room + 5 family room decorating tips
Other then the kitchen the bulk of our entertaining over the last few months took place in our family room.
I’m sure your family room got a lot of use this past Fall/Winter and now needs a little tlc!
From checking out bags of Halloween candy to naps after Thanksgiving dinner to Holiday gatherings and ringing in the New Year, Super Bowl and Oscar Parties … and don’t forget every day activities like early mornings with the kids, catching up on work + binge watching The Bachelor! … whew that’s quite the line up for hibernating over the winter months!
Family rooms are the original double duty space it’s gotta work for entertaining and for family fun and it has to make you happy + comfortable to be in the room! So how do we decorate to satisfy all that??!!??
5 family room decorating tips for a family friendly space
1. Color Palette:
Choose a color palette that works for you and the family.
You don’t have to make it too sophisticated with a don’t touch vibe or too juvenile that it looks like the kids gym.
A neutral palette works well with pops of color.
Don’t be afraid of a neutral palette just choose fabrics and accessories that will work for you!
Or choose a saturated paint color.
And don’t worry about a deeper paint color just support it with your other choices.
2. Upholstered Furniture:
Choose upholstery that’s kind of workhorse without anyone knowing.
Micro fiber is a great choice especially if you lean towards a light color fabric it’s impervious to almost anything. My tip: a great choice if you have pets.
Leather. Leather is timeless, it does scratch but will over time should work itself out.
Sunbrella Fabrics. Sunbrella is an awesome choice especially for ottomans!
Tight weave upholstery grade fabric.
Don’t over look a good upholstery grade fabric if you’re not a fan of microfiber or leather. Most all furniture stores have rings and rings of color options to choose from.
Hardwood is the flooring of choice right now especially if you’re thinking of selling anytime soon.
Cover with an area rug for added comfort and those dinners around the cocktail table.
Area rugs define your space, make it comfortable for family game night plus adds that punch of style your looking for.
4. Floor Plan:
Back into your floor plan by asking yourself some basic questions.
1. How many people NEED to sit?
2. Where is the best spot for the TV?
3. Any additional needs?? Like a desk area, bar area or bookcase storage you would like to have?
4. Pet friendly?
“Arrange the furniture the way you use the room”
5. TV Area:
Lastly, if you have a TV in your space make sure it’s comfortable to watch.
I know over the years TV’s have been hoisted above the fireplace but it’s really not ideal for comfortable viewing. Your neck has to be adjusted up and that is probably not the most comfortable or the best for your health.
Ahhh, it’s Wednesday anyone see the Bachelor Monday … time to catch-up!
be happy + be comfortable in your home
