Shiplap, our decorating buzz word this month!
So what exactly is shiplap???
Are you curious about shiplap? If it’s the right choice for your home, how to use it, where to buy it, how to install it?
Nonetheless, we’ve got your answers! Check out some inspiring photos from HGTV’s Fixer Upper plus a quick and entertaining installation video plus product information to purchase it.

Second, according to Wikipedia
Shiplap is also used indoors for the rough or rustic look that it creates when used as paneling or a covering for a wall or ceiling.
And furthermore, shiplap is …
-a type of wooden board used commonly in the construction of barns, sheds, outbuildings, and inexpensive or seasonal homes. It is either rough-sawn 1″ or milled 3/4″ pine or similarly inexpensive wood between 3″ and 10″ wide with a 3/8″ – 1/2″ rabbet on opposite sides of each end.
-most often used to describe any rabbeted siding material that overlaps in a similar fashion.
While I just love HGTV’s Fixer Upper with Chip and Joanna Gaines I also think they single oh nope double-handedly reincarnated shiplap!
Of course, shiplap can be discovered during a renovation as in many episodes of Fixer Upper, but for those of us who want to add this textural horizontal wall detail to our spaces, fortunately, we can purchase it at our home stores.

And finally, shiplap walls are most commonly painted in a white color but I have seen the walls kept in its original unpainted version too.
In case your wondering, the white paint color selected for their newly installed wall is from Behr Paint, color: Unwind, available at The Home Depot.

Hi J, I knew you would, shiplap would look perfect in your home! ~ Nancy
I have a 1911 full of original Shiplap. I’m getting started on the painting and I have a question before I begin. Do I paint inside the gaps of the Shiplap as well?
Hi Lena, Sounds like a wonderful project. Yes, I would paint the inside gaps of the Shiplap. This way the wall will have a continuous look. Enjoy! Nancy
Spray or not spray shiplap?
Hi Lucia, If it were me I would paint the shiplap making sure to prime first. That being said, there are many who spray shiplap and get great results as well. best, Nancy
Do you recommend flat, satin or eggshell paint for shiplap?
Hi Donna, Although I am not certain of what type of shiplap you are using, broadly I would recommend a Matte finish. Matte finishes are low sheen, cover well and have a little more cleanability. I like Benjamin Moore Aura Matte Finish and use it a lot. Also, Joanna Gains, https://Shop.Magnolia.com offers a paint line with a Matte Finish as well. One last note, I’m also a big proponent of priming before painting. Not everyone is, but I think the job looks cleaner with a good primer first.
