Pattern Mixing is a lot easier than you may think! Mixing patterns really is fun. And works within any design aesthetic. From Bohemian Design to Farmhouse Chic, Transitional to Traditional & Cottage a mix of patterns adds interest to a room. And patterns include all prints in your room, from wallpaper to flooring.
Pattern Mixing
First, mix patterns with a varying scale. Think Small, Medium, Large. For instance, the beautiful kitchen dining area below is a perfect example of mixing prints! Note the large scale wallpaper pattern, small scale stripe on sofa & ottoman, and a medium paisley print on the roman shades and chair pads.

Second, combining patterns with like colors is also a good way to mix patterns. Moreover, the unifying color can be more obvious in some of the prints than others. As you can see the common color that leads your eye around the bedroom below is white. And notice each pattern has a touch of white some more than others, but white nonetheless!

Third, support prints with solids. Because the use of solids will give your eye a place to rest and connect the patterns. And in the bedroom below the neutral wall color, solid draperies, and upholstered bed allow the patterns to seamlessly bring the room’s palette together.
