Creating balance in your home is an intricate part of every room’s design plan. From furniture placement, accessories, lighting, color, style, and scale. So, whether you realize it or not, balance plays a role in all of the decisions you will make.
For example, I am working to reimagine the smallest bedroom within a 4 bedroom home. This bedroom has beautiful views of the backyard and plenty of sunshine. Although it’s not a large room, we’ve come up with a design that will provide a multi-functional space for the entire family.
In light of this, the room will function as a flex space for a casual tv watching/reading/flex office. And when needed, an extra room for guests or it can morph into a grandchild’s bedroom.
As you can see, the success of this concept primarily hinges on the scale. With color taking an equally important role. Therefore, when it comes to selecting accessories, these two elements must coincide.
How we create balance with our design decisions
Before we begin, it’s important to know if we will be working with any of the homeowners’ existing pieces. So we’ve confirmed that we will need to incorporate the homeowners 2 re-upholstered antique tub style chairs, paint color, and existing curtains from Intentional Designs into the plan. Most often when designing a space, homeowners will have pieces they want to use. As you can imagine, this can be a help or a hindrance. Usually, if it is a hindrance the homeowner will see it clearly, so most often it’s not an issue. However, we view incorporating well-loved existing pieces as an important part of the overall design plan.
So for this multi-functional space, (and what space today isn’t multi-functional?) we’ve selected 2 Mid-Century Modern pieces from West Elm. And an area rug from Serena and Lily.

Furniture, Accessories & Paint
Why Mid-Century Modern? Smart design features and known for smaller-scale furniture, Mid-Century Modern furnishings make a good choice. Providing double duty, we selected a buffet for storage and television anchor, and a desk that doubles as a dressing table.
Accessories, such as an area rug add color and rich texture to space. Selecting this multi-textural area rug from Serena and Lily, Ryder Denim Rug in Natural lightens and breaks up the wood tones of the new furniture and pieces and flooring. Paint color selection in a blue/green color, Benjamin Moore, Constellation AF-540 provides a cool hue creating a balance for all the natural sunlight that pours into the room.
All in all, when the room is complete, it will be a relaxing space with a bit of a Boho vibe. Installation of the project is a few months away, but I’ll be sure to post the final project.
Thanks for stopping in today, we hope you’ve left inspired!
be happy & be comfortable in your home ~ Nancy
