Basically a roman shade is a decorative window covering. And you have the option for it to be only a valance or it can operate as a full window shade. However, roman shades are available in a variety of styles …
So all in all, Roman Shades come in a variety of shapes & sizes.
First, Decorative Operable Shades.
All this means is that the shade can be raised & lowered for full window coverage. When open the shade fabric pleats up creating a “stack” that gives the look of a valance. When lowered the fabric appears flat and covers the window with full privacy.
In addition, companies like Hunter Douglas offer a a selection of shades that offer full window coverage in a variety of fabrics.
Second, Decorative Stationary Roman Shades.
Basically this version is a valance.
Just as a side note, this pleated roman shade is also available as an operable shade as well.
And then there are your Roman Shade options.
Flat or a “swoop” bottom shade.
While there are a variety of fabric options available, you may need to seek a designers help if you don’t see what you need in stores or online.
And finally, Installation.
Basically there are 2 ways to install a roman shade. Either inside the window frame or outside of the frame.
Even though both are good options, an inside installation is typically more limiting due to the exact sizing of the shade and what type of window you have.
As a final note, if you install outside your window frame it looks best to extend the width and height of the shade to equal your moldings.
